APPLE DUMPLINGS

Apple Dumplings image

You can't go wrong with a classic Betty Crocker recipe, and this one is no exception. This timeless dessert is the epitome of fall-homemade flaky pastry is wrapped around a hot and bubbly apple and a warm brown sugar glaze is poured on top for an extra sweet finish. While these dumplings are sublime on their own, we wouldn't be opposed to eating these crispy apple treats with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!

Provided by By Betty Crocker Kitchens

Categories     Dessert

Time 1h5m

Yield 6

Number Of Ingredients 9

2 cups all-purpose flour or whole wheat flour
1 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup plus 2 tablespoons cold butter or margarine
4 to 5 tablespoons cold water
6 baking apples, about 3 inches in diameter (such as Braeburn, Granny Smith or Rome)
3 tablespoons raisins
3 tablespoons chopped nuts
2 1/2 cups packed brown sugar
1 1/3 cups water

Steps:

  • Heat the oven to 425°F. In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt. Cut in the butter, using a pastry blender or fork, until particles are the size of small peas. Sprinkle with the cold water, 1 tablespoon at a time, mixing well with fork until all flour is moistened. Gather the dough together, and press it into a 6x4-inch rectangle.
  • Lightly sprinkle flour over a cutting board or countertop. Cut off 1/3 of the dough with a knife; set aside. On the floured surface, place 2/3 of the dough. Flatten dough evenly, using hands or a rolling pin, into a 14-inch square; cut into 4 squares. Flatten the remaining 1/3 of the dough into a 14x7-inch rectangle; cut into 2 squares. You will have 6 squares of dough.
  • Remove the stem end from each apple. Place the apple on a cutting board. Using a paring knife, cut around the core by pushing the knife straight down to the bottom of the apple and pull up. Move the knife and make the next cut. Repeat until you have cut around the apple core. Push the core from the apple. (Or remove the cores with an apple corer.) Peel the apples with a paring knife.
  • Place 1 apple on the center of each square of dough. In a small bowl, mix the raisins and nuts. Fill the center of each apple with raisin mixture. Moisten the corners of each square with small amount of water; bring 2 opposite corners of dough up over apple and press corners together. Fold in sides of remaining corners; bring corners up over apple and press together. Place dumplings in a 13x9-inch (3-quart) glass baking dish.
  • In a 2-quart saucepan, heat the brown sugar and 1 1/3 cups water to boiling over high heat, stirring frequently. Carefully pour the sugar syrup around the dumplings.
  • Bake about 40 minutes, spooning syrup over apples 2 or 3 times, until crust is browned and apples are tender when pierced with a fork.
  • Serve warm or cooled with syrup from pan.

APPLE DUMPLINGS

Apple Dumplings image

An easy recipe for Apple Dumplings - fabulous cinnamon-sugar apples baked in a flaky pastry surrounded by a buttery brown sugar sauce.

Provided by Michelle

Categories     Dessert

Time 1h20m

Number Of Ingredients 11

3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup vegetable shortening (chilled)
⅓ cup ice water
8 medium Granny Smith apples (peeled and cored)
8 teaspoons unsalted butter
8 teaspoons granulated sugar
1½ teaspoons ground cinnamon
1½ cups light brown sugar
1 cup water
½ cup salted butter (cubed)

Steps:

  • Make the Pastry Dough: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Using a pastry blender or two knives, cut in the shortening until the mixture is crumbly. Gradually add the ice water, tossing the mixture with a fork, until the dough forms a cohesive mass. If the dough needs more water to come together, add it 1 teaspoon at a time. Divide the dough into eight equal portions, wrap each in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. In a small bowl, stir together the granulated sugar and cinnamon; set aside.
  • Assemble the Apples: Roll each portion of dough on a lightly floured work surface into a 7-inch square. Place an apple in the center of each square. Place 1 teaspoon of butter and 1 teaspoon of the cinnamon-sugar mixture in the center of each apple.
  • Gently bring up the corners of the pastry to the center of each apple; pinch the edges to seal. Place the pastry-encased apples in a greased 9x13-inch baking dish. Sprinkle with the remaining cinnamon-sugar mixture.
  • Make the Sauce: In a large saucepan, combine the brown sugar, water and butter over medium-high heat until it just begins to boil, stirring occasionally. Pour the sauce evenly over the apples.
  • Bake for 50 to 55 minutes or until the apples are tender and the pastry is golden brown, basting occasionally with the sauce. These are best served warm immediately after baking.

OLD-FASHIONED APPLE DUMPLINGS

Old-Fashioned Apple Dumplings image

These Old-Fashioned Apple Dumplings will bring back memories of Grandma's house! Whole apples are wrapped in pastry and baked with plenty of spices and a delicious syrup for a recipe full of nostalgia.

Provided by Jamie Lothridge

Categories     Miscellaneous

Time 1h20m

Number Of Ingredients 8

6 medium baking apples, such as honeycrisp or granny smith
Pie dough for a 9-inch double-crust pie (homemade or store bought)
3 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into 6 equal pieces
6 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 teaspoon apple pie spice
1 cup unfiltered apple juice or apple cider
¾ cup lightly packed light brown sugar
¼ cup unsalted butter

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F. Grease a 13x9-inch baking dish. Set aside.
  • Peel and core each apple. To prevent browning while you roll out the pie dough, you can place the prepared apples in a bowl of cold water with a squeeze of lemon juice.
  • If using homemade pie dough, roll the dough into a large rectangle, about 21x14 inches. Cut the dough into 6 equal pieces, about 7x7 inches each.
  • If using store-bought pie dough, unroll the dough and divide it into 6 equal pieces.
  • In a small bowl, stir together the granulated sugar and apple pie spice.
  • Place a cored apple into the center of each dough piece. In the center of each apple, place one of the butter pieces and a scant tablespoon of the spiced sugar mixture. Bring the corners of the dough up over the apple and use your fingers to pinch the edges together to seal the dough around the apple. Place in the greased baking dish. Repeat for all of the remaining apples and dough pieces.
  • Place the sauce ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a boil over medium heat, whisking frequently. Once the sauce comes to a rolling boil and the sugar is dissolved, remove from the heat and carefully pour it evenly over the apples. Sprinkle any remaining spiced sugar on top of the apples.
  • Bake for 50-55 minutes, or until golden and a paring knife can be easily inserted into the apples. Let cool slightly. Serve warm with some of the sauce.
