CRUNCHY GRANOLA WITH BERRIES & CHERRIES

Crunchy granola with berries & cherries image

Make your breakfast a fruity feast - this recipe is full of crunchy goodness

Provided by Angela Nilsen

Categories     Breakfast, Brunch, Dessert, Snack

Time 45m

Yield Makes about 12 breakfast bowlfuls

Number Of Ingredients 7

175g mixed nuts (pecan halves and peanuts in their red skins)
450g rolled oats
50g sesame seeds
50g sunflower seeds
125ml sunflower oil
100ml runny honey (try one of the lightly flavoured flower ones)
half a 170g packet dried berries and cherry

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 190C/Gas 5/fan oven 170C. Halve some of the pecans, leave some whole. Mix with peanuts, oats, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds and a pinch of salt in a large bowl. In a jug, measure the oil and pour into the mixture, then measure the honey - it will slide out easily. Stir together with a fork to break up any big clumps of oats.
  • Pour on to a large baking tray with sides, preferably non-stick, in a thin layer. Bake for 20-25 minutes, stirring well at least twice and bringing the mixture in from the edges, until it is golden. Transfer to a large bowl and leave to cool.
  • Mix in the berries and cherries and serve with plenty of chilled milk.
  • Store for up to 1 month in airtight container.

CRUNCHY GRANOLA (MUESLI)

Crunchy Granola (Muesli) image

I adapted this easy-to-make granola from the first Harrowsmith cookbook (I made a big reduction in butter and it still works). Because we have a houseful of people, I usually double the amounts shown here. If you feed a crowd, too, make sure you have a large enough pan. My ceramic roasting pan-which is 11" x 14"-holds a double recipe comfortably. UPDATE: At an exchange student's request, we are now adding cinnamon. Good addition. The recipe has been revised accordingly.

Time 25m

Yield 16 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 11

4 cups rolled oats
1 cup wheat germ
1 cup finely shredded coconut
1/4 cup sesame seeds
1/2 cup sunflower seeds
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
1/2 cup raisins (currants and diced apricots are also good) or 1/2 cup other dried fruit (currants and diced apricots are also good)
1/2 cup butter
1/4-1/2 cup honey (depending on your sweet tooth)
1/2 tablespoon milk
1/2 teaspoon salt

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Combine all the dry ingredients in the baking pan (first six items). Add raisins (or other dried fruits) after cooking.
  • Heat the butter, honey, milk and salt in a small saucepan until all the butter melts.
  • Dribble honey-butter mixture over dry ingredients, and mix well to moisten all the dry ingredients.
  • Bake for 20-30 minutes (depending on how hot your oven runs), stirring frequently.
  • This can easily over-brown (burn), so keep an eye on it.
  • Remove from oven and stir in the raisins or other dried fruit.
  • When cool, store in an airtight container. It keeps very well.

QUICK 'N' CRUNCHY GRANOLA

Quick 'n' Crunchy Granola image

Granola is my family's favorite cereal but we rarely buy it from the store because it's so expensive. So I decided to try and make my own. We will never buy granola from the store again! This is so easy and delicious; everyone should try it! Some of my family members mix in raisins or almonds just before eating (no need to bake them.) But remember you MUST STIR the granola after it bakes for 10 minutes. I didn't read the recipe carefully and burnt my first batch. Enjoy.;)

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MUESLI AND GRANOLA - FIT AND FLEX GRANOLA
The fundamental difference is that Granola is baked and muesli isn’t. So granola often contains oil or sweeteners to bind the oats together while muesli is somewhat looser. So while muesli is uncooked and granola is baked, that doesn’t necessarily mean that muesli is healthier. Many muesli and granola brands have added sugars and oils.

CROWNFIELD FRUIT CRUNCHY MUESLI - REVIEW - GRANOLA BREAKFAST
A bit. Preferably naturally flavoured when possible, using honey for example. This Crownfield option is not naturally flavoured other than the fruit, but it´s not too sweet or sugary for me either. It´s not frosted flake. There is just enough sweet kick in the crunchy nugget to compliment the dry fruits and they go together nicely.
