My neighbor shared this easy-to-make appetizer with me, and it's been a hit whenever I've served it. I took it to our family reunion last summer and it quickly disappeared! I love it because it's simple, yet tasty.

Steps:
- In a large saucepan combine the vinegar, sugar, onion, ginger, mustard seeds, lemon zest, cinnamon stick, salt, allspice, and cloves and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to a simmer and cook until mixture is thickened and reduced by 2/3, forming a thick syrup. Add the figs and cook gently until the figs are very soft and beginning to fall apart and most of the liquid they've given off has evaporated, about 30 minutes.
- Transfer the chutney to a non-reactive container and allow to come to room temperature before serving. The chutney may be made up to 3 weeks in advance and stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container. (Alternately, hot chutney may be ladled into hot sterilized canning jars and processed in a hot-water bath according to manufacturer's directions.)

FIG JAM AND GOAT CHEESE CROSTINI
Flavors of fall 'sage and figs' pair up with tangy goat cheese for an elegant appetizer that's a perfect pairing for a glass of bubbly. The toasts can be made up to a day ahead and stored at room temperature in an airtight container. The sage can also be prepared a day ahead, loosely wrapped in a paper towel, and stored in an airtight container. Fig jam can be purchased at high-end grocery stores. Quince jam, a.k.a. membrillo, would also be delicious here. Taken from CHOW.com

- Caramel Apple Dip. This first recipe doesn’t contain apples, per se, but it’s certainly the perfect dip for them. Think of it as deconstructed caramel apple, if you will.
- Apple Pecan Baked Brie. Today, on images you can smell: melt-in-your-mouth brie cheese topped with apples, pecans, and cranberries with a brown sugar and cinnamon glaze.
- Spicy Apple Salsa. Salsa is usually made with tomatoes, but this fruity version consists of apples. It also has jalapenos, onions, and Anaheim chilis to give the sweet fruit a spicy complement.
- Cheesy Apple Bites. Apples and cheese are a match made in heaven. Case in point: these cheesy apple bites. Here’s how it goes: apple slices are smeared with either blue or whipped cream cheese (or a mix of both) and sprinkled with chives, walnuts, celery, and pomegranate seeds.
- Chicken Waldorf Salad. I’m not a big salad person, but I’m a sucker for the Waldorf salad. How can anyone not be? It’s creamy, refreshing, and crunchy on so many levels.
- Apple Pie Bites. Apple pies are great, but there’s just something incredibly adorable about these bite-sized versions. With flaky phyllo cups at the bottom, cinnamon apples in the middle, and bourbon-kissed whipped cream and salted caramel on top, these bites may be small, but they’re definitely big on flavor.
- Apple and Honey Goat Cheese Appetizer. If only the Evil Queen knew how to make this appetizer, it wouldn’t have taken her forever to enchant Snow White.
- Apple Cheddar Kabobs. How can something so delectable be so simple? These kabobs are a must-have at your next party. They couldn’t be easier to make. Just thread cubes of apples and cheddar cheese into a skewer.
- Apple Pita Bites. Toasted mini-pitas are topped with herb cream cheese, apple slices, gorgonzola, pecans, bacon, and drizzled with honey. Now, this is what I call the perfect bite.
- Apple Nachos. This dessert tastes nothing like classic nachos, but it’s equally delicious. Apple slices are drizzled with melted peanut butter and chocolate and topped with chocolate chips, to boot.

- Place the orange zest, star anise, cinnamon stick and bay leaf in the center of a 6-inch square of cheesecloth; pull up the sides and tie the ends with butcher’s twine to make a little packet (if you don’t have cheesecloth you can simply throw the spices in the pot and fish them out at the end).
- Nestle the packet into the saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, then reduce the heat to a simmer on your lowest burner. Cook, stirring occasionally and smashing the figs with the back of a spoon, until thickened (it should be the consistency of a jam), about 15-20 minutes.
- Remove the pan from the heat and discard the packet of spices. Smash the figs a bit more with the back of the spoon. The chutney should be thick, but if it looks dry you can stir in a splash or two of water. Stir in the walnuts. Serve warm or at room temperature.
