HERBAL TEA | HERBAL CHAI

Herbal Tea | Herbal Chai image

Indian Herbal Tea is made from herbs, ginger, cardamom and lemongrass. This Herbal Chai can definitely become your cup of goodness to begin a day with.

Provided by Dassana Amit

Categories     Beverages

Time 20m

Number Of Ingredients 9

4 cups water
3 to 4 teaspoons black tea powder ((tea dust) or 3 to 4 black tea bags, optional - for using tea leaves, check notes no 2)
1 inch ginger (for a milder taste and 2 inch ginger for a stronger flavor. it should be peeled, washed and either crushed or grated.)
2 to 3 green cardamoms (- crushed or powdered in a mortar-pestle (optional))
1 lemongrass stalk
3 to 4 mint leaves
3 to 4 holy basil leaves ((tulsi) - optional)
½ to ¾ cup milk (or soy milk, cashew milk or almond milk - add more or less as per your taste, optional)
8 teaspoons raw sugar (or regular sugar or any sweetener of choice, add more for more sweetness)

Steps:

  • In a kettle pan or saucepan, add the water. Peel the ginger and then crush the ginger and cardamom in the mortar-pestle. This is important otherwise you won't get the flavor of ginger and cardamom in the tea.
  • Add the crushed ginger and cardamoms to the water.
  • Add the lemongrass in the water. I usually cut it into many pieces. So chop them and add to the water.
  • Also, add the mint leaves and holy basil leaves to the tea.
  • Boil this water and herb mixture for 7 to 8 minutes or till the color of the water changes to a mild yellowish hue. This change of color of the water will be due to the ginger releasing its juices and flavors in the water.
  • Add sugar or your preferred sweetener and simmer for 1 to 2 minutes more. You can choose to omit the sugar if you prefer.
  • Now, add the tea powder or tea bags and simmer for 2 to 3 minutes or till the water gets a deep hue of red. Tea powder or tea bags can be omitted to make a herbal tisane.
  • Add milk. Simmer the tea for 2 to 3 minutes if you are using regular milk or soy milk. Skip the milk if you prefer.
  • If you are using almond milk or cashew milk, then just stir the milk with tea and remove from the kettle. Heating further would cause the cashew or almond milk to become slimy and split.
  • Strain the Herbal Tea through a strainer right into the cups.
  • Serve the Herbal Chai hot as is or pair with snacks.

TEA HOUSE CHAI CONCENTRATE

Tea House Chai Concentrate image

Allen Mayer says at his tea house in Ottawa, Canada, they now serve their own chais. Here's how they do it. For a mocha chai, use chocolate milk instead of white. For herbal chai, replace the Darjeeling with 1 tsp. each of chamomile, fennel seed and peppermint. This can be halved or doubled!

Provided by Sharon123

Categories     Beverages

Time 20m

Yield 8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 15

2 teaspoons black peppercorns
2 teaspoons fresh gingerroot
6 cardamom pods
10 inches cinnamon sticks
3 teaspoons whole cloves
8 cups water
8 teaspoons tea (Darjeeling, or herbal, Rooibis, or your choice)
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 teaspoons honey
hot milk
ground cinnamon (to garnish)
chocolate milk
1 teaspoon dried chamomile
1 teaspoon fennel seed, crushed
1 teaspoon dried peppermint

Steps:

  • Crush together the black pepper, ginger root, cardamom, cinnamon stick, and cloves in a coffee grinder or food processor(just pulse, do not grind to a powder).
  • Add to 8 cups of water. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to medium and cook for 10 minutes.
  • Add 8 teaspoons of tea. Allen uses Darjeeling OP. Steep for 8-10 minutes. Stain out the spices and tea. Add 1 teaspoons of vanilla and 3 teaspoons of honey, or sweeten to taste. Enjoy!
  • This can be refrigerated for weeks.
  • Heat up as needed and add an equal amount of hot(Allen steams his) milk. Top with ground cinnamon.
  • Note:.
  • For a mocha chai, use chocolate milk instead of white.
  • For herbal chai, replace the Darjeeling with 1 teaspoons each of chamomile, fennel seed and peppermint.

  • Anti-inflammatory Weight Loss Tea. Because of my skepticism surrounding whether or not herbal teas can be beneficial when it comes to your health, I love that this recipe comes along with a tale of the author’s own experience with the tea.
  • Energy Herbal Tea. This recipe for Energy Herbal Tea looks delicious, with both sweet and herbal aspects to it. I always tend to add honey to my herbal tea because I find that it eradicates any aftertaste that might not be as pleasant as the tea itself, with a touch of sweetness.
  • Chamomile and Turmeric Evening Tea. Chamomile is a classic calming, soothing ingredient. Whether it’s in a tea like this Chamomile and Turmeric Evening Tea, a room spray or a candle, it never fails to make me feel relaxed and ready for bed.
  • Banana Tea. My dad has suffered from insomnia for a while now, which is not a position you want to be in as a man who works five full days a week and has to commute to and from there.
  • Herbal Chai Tea. I am not a fan of coffee, so whenever I meet someone at a coffee shop or have a craving for something warm as I am on my way to work on a chilly morning I will always opt for a chai latte.
  • Floral Herbal Tea. I cannot get over how beautiful this Floral Herbal Tea is. It almost looks too beautiful to consume, and I am sure that this would make the prettiest gift for any tea lovers you know.
  • Apple Fig Herbal Tea. I have tried and enjoyed different apple flavored teas from the store, but never one paired with fig. The fact that the figs are dried will mean that they are deliciously sweet which I like as I prefer my teas to be so.
  • Herbal Tea for Allergies. I am not the most clued up person when it comes to all the fancy ingredients in herbal teas, so I was profoundly glad to see that this recipe comes along with a description of exactly what each ingredient within it does, and how it is beneficial to you.
  • Licorice Tea. Licorice tea is good for soothing sore throats and reducing the amount of phlegm, not the most pleasant of topics I know, that we produce as a result of that.
  • Honey, Lemon and Ginger Tea. This is my all-time favorite tea remedy and probably will be for eternity. I have tried Honey, Lemon and Ginger Tea that you can buy from the store but it is never the same as adding real fresh ginger, a lemon wedge and a dollop of honey to a cup of boiling water.

  • Lemon and elderflower tea for fighting common flu. Elderflowers and lemon might easily become your most favorite herbal tea in the world. While lemon tea is a no stranger to tea drinkers, elderflowers are still not as widely used as they deserve.
  • Ginger tea. Fresh, dried, pickled or powdered, ginger tastes well in any form and in any dish or drink – especially in tea. Ginger tea is the only tea we absolutely recommend making with fresh instead of dry ingredients.
  • Mint and lavender. Upgrade the simple mint tea by adding a touch of lavender flowers. Lavender may help with relaxation, and help freshen the breath. Together with mint it gives a delicious and potent tea with relaxing, antimicrobial, antiviral and antioxidant properties[3].
  • Chamomile and lemon blam. When you combine two tasty herbs with relaxing properties, you get the most delicious sleepy time tea in the world. Lemon balm or melissa is a herb from a mint family with mild minty and lemony flavor.
  • Herbal chai tea. Nothing beats a cup of warm chai – in any season. While the real chai is made with strong black tea, herbal chai has no caffeine at all.
  • Cinnamon and apple. Cinnamon and apple tea is true classic in the world of herbal fruit teas. You can make them from cinnamon stick and cinnamon powder, and with fresh and dried apple pieces.
