INSTANT POT® WHITE BEANS

Instant Pot® White Beans image

Instead of buying canned beans, I use my pressure cooker to cook them from dry--no soaking required! If you do decide to soak the beans, check your appliance manual because cooking time will be shorter.

Provided by LauraF

Categories     Side Dish

Time 55m

Yield 10

Number Of Ingredients 1

2 cups dry great Northern beans

Steps:

  • Pour beans into a multi-functional pressure cooker (such as Instant Pot®). Cover with a few inches of cool water. Close and lock the lid. Select Manual; set timer for 28 minutes on high pressure according to manufacturer's instructions. Allow 10 to 15 minutes for pressure to build.
  • Release pressure using the natural-release method according to manufacturer's instructions, 10 to 40 minutes. Unlock and remove the lid. Drain beans and let cool.

INSTANT POT WHITE BEANS WITH ROSEMARY & GARLIC

Instant Pot White Beans With Rosemary & Garlic image

Rustic, hearty braised Instant Pot white beans with rosemary and garlic, finished with olive oil. Serve as a main, side dish or with toasted bread for breakfast. A perfect Mediterranean dish for any time of the year.

Provided by Instant pot Eats

Categories     Side

Time 45m

Yield 6

Number Of Ingredients 13

2 cups dry white beans such as cannellini, Great Northern or Haricot
4 cups water
1 teaspoon bicarb soda
4 cups soaked white beans (yielded from 2 cups of dry beans)
4 cups water
1 cube of vegetable stock (see notes)
5 cloves garlic, roughly diced
3 sprigs of rosemary
1/2 medium onion, cut into 4 wedges
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons olive oil (see notes for WW adjustments)
1.5 tablespoons lemon juice (1/3 lemon)
A little lemon zest (optional)

Steps:

  • Soak the beans in water and bicarb soda for 12 hours (overnight or during the day). They will double in size. Rinse and use right away or refrigerate in an airtight container for a maximum of 12-24 hours.
  • Add the beans, water, vegetable stock cube, garlic, rosemary, onions and salt to the pot and mix through. Pop the lid on top, lock and make sure the top valve is pointing to Sealing. Press Manual/Pressure Cook, HIGH pressure and set for 10 minutes. The pressure build-up will take about 7-10 minutes. Once 10 minutes are up, allow the pressure to release naturally for 20-25 minutes.
  • Open the lid (after quick release, if needed) and skim off the onions from the top. Remove the rosemary sprigs (the needles should fall off into the soup and can be eaten). Stir the beans.
  • Depending on how soupy or thick you like your braised beans, you might want to discard about 1/2 cup of the cooking liquid.
  • Now, to thicken the beans, add some of the cooked beans and the broth liquid to a blender or food processor (about 1 cup, see pics above) and blend until smooth and thick. Return the puree to the pot and stir through the beans. The starched puree will thicken the mixture.
  • Finally, add the lemon juice and olive oil and stir through before serving. You can also add the olive oil once it is served.

CREAMY SOUTHERN STYLE WHITE BEANS | INSTANT POT RECIPE

Creamy Southern Style White Beans | Instant Pot Recipe image

This recipe easily doubles or triples!

Provided by Kirsten Sandoval

Number Of Ingredients 7

3 cups dried white beans (or 4 cans cooked white beans, rinsed and drained)
1/2 cup Mesa de Vida Creole cooking & seasoning sauce
2 cups high-quality chicken or vegetable broth of your choice
1 chopped onion (reserve 4 Tb for topping, if desired)
1 chopped bell pepper
3 bay leaves
Salt and hot sauce to taste *Mesa de Vida cooking and seasoning sauces are extremely low in sodium so you can salt to your own taste/health needs

Steps:

  • Rince and drain your beans, then place them in a large metal or glass container. If prepping the night before you want to make the recipe: Pour enough cool water over the beans to cover by two inches. If prepping the morning you want to make the recipe (my preferred method): Pour enough boiling water over the top to cover by 2 inches. Let the beans soak on your counter until you are ready to proceed.
  • About 45 minutes before you want to make the recipe, rinse and strain the soaked beans. Pour the beans into the Instant Pot, add 6 cups of fresh water. Cook at pressure for 10 minutes, then let the pressure release naturally. Strain all of the liquid, then proceed with the rest of the recipe.
  • Place your cooked beans, Mesa de Vida Creole cooking & seasoning sauce, chopped onion, chopped bell pepper, broth and salt, to taste, into the Instant Pot. Cook at pressure for 10 minutes, then let the pressure release naturally.
  • Remove the lid and stir the beans vigorously to mash them a bit to create a creamy, thick consistency. Keep stirring and mashing until the consistency is as thick as you like it! *If your beans happen to still be too firm to mash, cook at pressure in 5 minute increments until they are tender. This recipe was tested with dried cannelini beans and dried pinto beans, and the times given worked perfectly. Beans can differ depending on their age and variety, so you may have to adjust cooking time.
  • Serve the beans, topped with a bit of fresh chopped onion and hot sauce, if you wish. It is typical to serve these creamy Southern-style beans with Johnny cakes (also called hoe cakes, or corn cakes - similar to a pancake made with corn meal), or over hot cooked rice. Enjoy!

INSTANT POT WHITE BEANS (CANNELLINI, NAVY, GREAT NORTHERN)

Instant Pot White Beans (Cannellini, Navy, Great Northern) image

A simple no-fail recipe for Instant Pot white beans that can be used for meal prep and easy dinner recipes. Use this recipe to cook all varieties of dried white beans, including Instant Pot Navy beans, Cannellini and Great Northern. This recipe makes a lot of beans (about 6+ cups) which means you can use the beans throughout the week or freeze leftovers. Or, simply cut the recipe in half. Total Instant Pot Cooking Time: 20 minutes to reach full pressure + 25 to 30 minutes to cook + 20 minutes to naturally release pressure. This recipe was originally posted May 15, 2019 and updated Sept. 14, 2021.

Provided by Jenny

Categories     Side Dishes

Time 1h

Number Of Ingredients 7

16 ounces (about 2 1/2 cups) dried white beans
8 cups water
2 tablespoons olive oil (optional)
2 teaspoons kosher salt or 1 teaspoon table salt
1 small bay leaf (optional)
4 to 6 smashed garlic cloves (optional, but adds flavor)
A few sprigs of fresh herbs, like rosemary, thyme or parsley (optional)

Steps:

  • Rinse the beans under running water.
  • Combine beans, water, olive oil, salt, bay leaf, garlic and herbs in the Instant Pot.
  • Secure the lid and set the release valve to sealing.
  • Cook on high pressure for 25 to 40 minutes, depending on the variety of bean.Navy bean: 25 minutesGreat Northern: 30 to 35 minutesCannellini: 30 to 40 minutes
  • When the cooking time is done, let the pressure release naturally (about 25 minutes)
  • If the beans don't seem cooked all the way, you can simply seal the lid again and cook for an additional 3 to 5 minutes. You can use an Instant or natural release. You can repeat this process as necessary until the beans are cooked to your liking.
  • The bean liquid is really flavorful and can be used as stock for soups, stews, or chili.

INSTANT POT TURKEY CHILI WITH WHITE BEANS

Instant Pot Turkey Chili With White Beans image

Instant Pot Turkey Chili With White Beans gives you the big, bold flavor you crave with a fraction of the fat. This recipe makes a WW (formerly Weight Watchers) friendly meal.

Provided by Deborah T

Categories     Soup

Time 1h5m

Number Of Ingredients 15

15 ounces of dry Great Northern beans, rinsed
16 ounce package of 99% fat-free ground turkey
28 ounce can of canned tomato sauce
15 ounce can of reduced sodium chicken broth
1 jalapeno pepper, finely chopped, seeded and ribs removed
1 medium to large yellow sweet onion, chopped
10 ounce can of diced tomatoes with green chiles (Rotel is one brand name)
3 1/2 teaspoons of chili powder
3 1/2 teaspoons of garlic powder
2 teaspoons of salt
2 teaspoons of onion powder
3 teaspoons of black pepper
2 teaspoons on ground cumin
2 teaspoons of smoky paprika
1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper

Steps:

  • Put the turkey into the inner liner of your Instant Pot. Set it to the browning cycle. Use a fork or spatula to break up the turkey as it cooks. Use a turkey baster to remove excess fat that cooks out. If you use 99% lean meat, as recommended, you will have very little fat to pull out of the pot.
  • Add in all the remaining ingredients, stir.
  • Close the lid and steam valve, as stated in the unit's instruction manual.
  • Set the Instant Pot to the bean/chili mode, and press the "more" button to set the chili to run for a full forty minutes (to ensure the beans cook fully).
  • When the timer chirps, release the steam. Remove the lid and stir the ingredients.

INSTANT POT WHITE BEANS

Instant Pot White Beans image

Time 55m

Yield 6

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 (1-lb.) bag Camellia Brand Great Northern Beans, rinsed and sorted
1 tablespoon onion powder
2 teaspoons garlic powder
1-2 teaspoons salt
1 bay leaf
6 cups unsalted vegetable broth, chicken broth, or water

Steps:

  • Directions: Add all ingredients to the Instant Pot. Cover, twist to lock the lid, and turn the valve to sealing. Press the Beans/Chili button (or set to 30 Minutes). When the timer beeps, allow the pressure to release naturally for at least 20 minutes. Then, turn the valve to venting. Enjoy cooked beans over rice, or use as you would canned beans. If not using right away, store beans along with any excess liquid, in an airtight container in the refrigerator up to one week, or freeze for up to 6 months. Instant Pot Tips for cooking beans and saving even more time: Just as with the stovetop, there's no need to soak beans before cooking them in the Instant Pot. As you're preparing your ingredients, plug in the Instant Pot, and press the Sauté button. This will allow it to pre-heat, helping it to come to full pressure faster once you've selected Beans/Chili mode. After you've added your ingredients and locked the lid, press Off to end Sauté mode. Then, select Beans/Chili mode. If you prefer a slightly firmer bean texture, use the Manual mode and set the timer for anywhere from 25-27 minutes. Choosing the Beans/Chili mode cooks the beans for 30 minutes and is a no-brainer, but finding your perfect cooking time/texture is a personal preference that benefits from some experimenting. The general rule of thumb is 4 cups of liquid for every 1 cup of beans, but again, you can experiment for personal preference. As long as your beans are covered by at least 1 inch of liquid, you're good. When cooking beans, never fill the Instant Pot more than halfway full. Beans and grains expand and need the space to do so. As noted in the recipe, it's important to allow the pressure to release naturally for at least 20 minutes before turning the valve to venting.

  • Set to manual high pressure for 30 minutes. Let come to pressure and cook. When finished, let pot natural release for 20 minutes, then finish releasing steam manually.
  • If you are cooking the beans on the stovetop, plan on soaking beans overnight in refrigerator. When ready to make, add beans, water, salt, garlic, bay leaves, and 3 sprigs fresh sage to the cooking pot. On a low simmer, cook until beans are plump and tender, but not mushy.
  • Meanwhile, add 1 tablespoon olive oil to a small skillet and turn to medium heat. Once hot, add sage leaves, individually, and capers. Let cook for a few minutes on each side, turning over as they cook until crispy. Place sage and capers on a napkin.

  • Manually release any remaining pressure, carefully open pot. Remove ham shanks to cutting board and shred/cut meat into bite-sized pieces. Add back to soup and season with kosher salt and black pepper to taste. Ladle into bowls and serve with a little hot sauce on the side.
