This is an old fashioned recipe that goes back to the pioneers! Easy to make and absolutely delicious. Great reviews!

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 cup raisins
1 cup boiling water
2 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 tablespoons melted butter
1/2 cup broken pecans or walnuts

Steps:

  • Bring water to a boil, remove from heat, add raisins and let sit for one hour Do not pour off extra water. Whisk together flour, sugar, salt, baking soda in a large bowl. Pour in soaked raisins with extra water, vanilla extract and butter. Mix with a spoon
  • Fold in nuts. Spray a 9 x 5 loaf pan with cooking spray. Spread dough in pan. Bake in preheated 350 degree oven for 45 to 50 minutes or until center tests done. Remove from oven and cool in pan for 10 minutes before removing. You could add a powdered sugar glaze to this bread if desired. Makes 1 loaf

Number Of Ingredients 7

2 cups raisins
4 teaspoons baking soda
2 cups water
4 cups flour
2 cups sugar
1/4 cup cooking oil (canola)
1 teaspoon salt

Steps:

  • Place raisins in big mixing bowl. Sprinkle baking soda over raisins. Boil water, and pour water over baking soda. Stir if needed until baking soda is dissolved.
  • Let sit overnight, or 6 to 8 hours.
  • Then add flour, sugar, salt, oil, and stir.
  • Bake in 3 small metal coffee cans (12 - 16 oz) or 2 standard size loaf pans, well greased & floured. Pam / cooking spray works, but crisco & flour results in a better "crust" to the bread.
  • Bake at 350 degrees for 1 - 2 hours. Baking time varies depending on how light or dark the pans are, and whether you are using clear glass or dark metal. Start checking at 1 hour. Bread is done when a skewer poked through the bread comes out clear.

Steps:

  • Pour water over raisins.
  • Add baking soda.
  • Let stand overnight. In morning add remaining ingredients.
  • Grease three 1-pound coffee cans and bake at 350 for 1 hour, then remove bread from cans.

2 cups raisins
2 tablespoons butter
2 teaspoons baking soda
2 cups boliing water
2 eggs
2 cups sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
4 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup pecans, chopped

Steps:

  • Combine the raisins, butter, soda and boiling water. Store in the refrigerator overnight. The next day :.
  • Combine the rest of the items until well blended with the raisin mixture.
  • Pour into 3 well greased and floured 1 pound pans- she used coffee cans- filling pans/cans half full.
  • Preheat oven to 350- bake 1 hour and 10 minutes at 350.
  • Freezes well- Will dry out if overbaked- some ovens may take less time.

1 1/2 cups raisins
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 cup boiling water
3 tablespoons butter or 3 tablespoons margarine
1 cup sugar
2 cups flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup chopped walnuts
1 egg, beaten

Steps:

  • Put raisins in a bowl, sprinkle with baking soda and pour boiling water over. Mix well and set aside to cool.
  • Cream together butter and sugar. Add flour and nuts and mix well. Add egg and raisins and mix well.
  • Pour into 2 1 pound clean empty coffee cans that have been sprayed well with non-stick spray.
  • Bake at 350 degrees F. for 1 hour. When done, cool for 15 minutes on rack and then remove from cans to cool.
